Security in Rome areas including the
central Termini train station, and the city's Esquilino district
will be boosted, the capital's prefect Lamberto Giannini said on
Tuesday after a meeting of the Provincial committee for public
order and security at the prefecture.
"We will soon implement zones where controls are strongly
boosted" with a significant increase in the police presence,
"starting from the areas of Termini and the Esquilino", said
Giannini.
The security and crime-prevention measures are also being
considered in areas close to the Tuscolana station.
"These areas will soon be active", said the prefect.
Giannini went on to say that "repeated controls will be carried
out if there are individuals who commit crimes" or who are
responsible for "behaviours or problems" affecting public order.
Giannini explained that security would be upped in new areas of
Rome in addition to sensitive sites during the Jubilee Holy Year
celebrations, which is expected to attract millions of pilgrims
and visitors in the Italian capital, by "taking into
consideration locations where crimes are committed as well as
citizens' reports".
The initiative "will be limited in time and will concern a
restricted number of areas", he explained.
Measures implemented during the Jubilee are set to include the
deployment of 700 security units in the capital in addition to
those regularly operating to monitor sensitive sites and in
particular the Vatican, Basilicas and the city centre.
