The policies of Premier Giorgia
Meloni's government had "a limited effect on income
distribution" last year and equity decreased "to a slight
degree", Istat said on Monday.
The national statistics agency said its Gini index, which
measures inequality, increased by over a tenth of a percentage
point in 2024, going from 30.25% to 30.40%
It said the replacement of the controversial citizenship wage
(RdC) minimum-income benefit with another benefit for poor
households, the inclusion allowance (ADI), had a negative
impact on the poorer households that was only partially offset
by reforms of income-tax Irpef.
The government said it scrapped the RdC because it was subject
to widespread abuse and took away people's incentive to find
work.
